What’s Required?

The flute is considered a “wind” instrument and falls into this category with others such as the recorder, clarinet and oboe. Brass instruments are trumpets, tubas, trombones and others that are obviously made of brass.

For the woodwind student it is recommended having an instrument for your first lesson. Often these instruments are provided through school band programs. Alternatively they can be rented and we can recommend sources to rent from. Woodwind instruments range in quality but for the beginner a new or used one can be had for roughly $200.00. Your instructor will advise you on what book is required and will be based on the level that you are starting from. We do not sell books but can either purchase one for you or recommend where to buy.

Lessons

For the complete beginner the instructor will show you the basic technique, breathing and how to hold the instrument correctly and posture. Woodwind students will learn traditional notation right from the start and this instrument tends to be taught in a more classic style. However there is no limit to the music that can be played and the student will be taught a combination of traditional and modern arrangements.
