What’s Required?

The world of guitars is almost limitless with gadgets and toys and guitar designs. However to start all you need is something with six strings that can be “setup” properly so that it’s playable. For guitar students there is a large variety of affordable “starter packages” available on the market. However used is also a good option or if you are unsure of the commitment a rental is the best option. We do rent guitars at West End Music on a monthly basis, please ask for details. When considering a used guitar there are few things to watch out for, especially for acoustic models and like any wooden object it’s subject to changes in temperature and humidity. If it has not been properly cared for you can end up with an expensive wall decoration. It’s somewhat complicated and lengthy to describe so please ask us for help. We will show you what to look out for and even help you find something.

Lesson

If you already have a guitar, please bring it in for your first lesson so that we can asses it’s state of repair and playability. Complete beginners will learn the parts of the instrument, how to hold it properly and how to read basic notation and tablature. Tablature is a modern form of music writing design specifically for fretted instruments, like a diagram of where to place your fingers. It is the most common form of music notation for guitar today, however our instructors teach both traditional and modern forms of note reading and your instructor will advise you on what books may be required.
